OSTAR Projection LED in Surface Mount Technology (SMT)
OSRAM turns cell phones into projectors
The new OSTAR Projection SMT LED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is now even more compact and efficient than ever before, which means it can be integrated even in pico projectors such as the ones now being fitted in cell phones. The new OSTAR Projection measures just 5.8 x 4.7 x 1.5 mm and, in contrast to its predecessor, does not have additional connectors or board for dissipating heat. This mini version is therefore for applications where space is at a premium, making it ideal for pico projectors. These projectors can be either integrated directly in cell phones or attached to them as accessories. Thanks to SMT technology the new OSTAR Projection is now suitable for standard solder processes.
A pico projector needs just one OSTAR module. This module contains four 1 mm˛ RGB chips – two green, one red and one blue. As an alternative to this RGB version, the OSTAR Projection SMT is also available with four ultra-white chips. Depending on the color, the chips are based on thin-film or ThinGaN technology and are designed for optimum efficiency. They are located together with protective diodes on a ceramic carrier with a monolithic glass window that provides cover and protection. As embedded versions with external dimensions of 1.5 cm x 3 cm, pico projectors with the mini LED provide a system brightness of 10 lm for a consumption of 1 W. As accessory versions pico projectors measure 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm and can be operated with a higher wattage. They can then achieve higher brightness values of more than 15 lm. Samples of OSTAR Projection are available; volume production starts in the fall.
With its high efficiency and compact dimensions, the new OSTAR Projection SMT is not only ideal for use in pico projectors, it is also providing fresh impetus for applications in the general lighting sector.
