IT student research project on show at embedded world 2008

“embedded world” is the leading European exhibition for hardware, software and tools relating to the embedded field. It is held annually in Nuremberg. It has already served as a platform for presenting various research projects undertaken at Lörrach University of Cooperative Education with input from exhibiting companies.

This year it was the turn of Michael Dischinger, a student in his sixth semester of an IT degree course, to have his work put on show. The context for this was the Pablo display evaluation platform exhibit at the stand belonging to the semiconductor distributor Sasco Holz GmbH. The work relates to a highly efficient software-based JPEG decoder for applications on embedded microcontrollers. Mr. Dischinger explains: “Displaying and illustrating information graphically using images is becoming increasingly common within the area of embedded systems. As with conventional PC technology, JPEG encoding is again being used to reduce the data volumes involved. Microcontrollers tend to be low on performance, which means that efficient encoding and decoding algorithms are required to facilitate image processing. My project involved evaluating various software decoding algorithms, selecting a decoder, porting it to the target platform and subsequently optimizing it. As a result, it is now possible for an image with 800 x 600 pixels to be decoded on a 75 MHz processor in approximately 1 ½ seconds.”

Professor Axel Sikora, Head of IT at the university, points out the following: “As far as I am concerned, the project does not just stand out on account of the excellent technical results achieved and the fact that it can be implemented immediately, but also because of the in-depth analysis of the underlying algorithms and their potential applications, without which the results could not have been achieved in the first place”.

The project was also supervised by Marc Colling, Managing Partner at the engineering firm RevisionOne Engineering GmbH. He already has several years’ experience under his belt when it comes to working intensively with the Steinbeis Transfer Center for Embedded Design and Networking at Lörrach University of Cooperative Education. He has overseen several student studies and research projects to date: “Time and again, I am impressed by the high level of motivation shown by the students and the solid technical education they are receiving, which is totally geared towards the future”.

Today’s distributors are increasingly being required to enhance their hardware products through services. This fact makes suitably qualified junior employees more important than ever. That is why it is becoming increasingly important to cooperate with educational institutions that have a vocational outlook, adds Harald Thomas, Marketing Group Manager at Sasco Holz.
